Healthy Attachments or Hangups?
The idea of letting go of attachments often comes up in our discussions and it's always a curious question. What about the people I love? Are they attachments? What about how much I love coffee in the morning? Is that an attachment?
This morning, I found a beautiful re-phrase by our friend Alan Watts that I love.
"Attachment doesn't refer to things like enjoying dinner or appreciating beauty or sleep, and it isn't about certain responses like fear or sorrow. These are all natural responses of our organism to its environment. The Sanskrit word is klesha, and a better translation than "attachment" might be the slang term "hang-up". You know, we get hung up on this or that thing - we get stuck or blocked or can't remove ourselves from a state of waggly hesitation." ~ Out of Your Mind, Alan Watts
How does this land for you? Does it make sense? Is it easier to discern between healthy attachments to our environment and unhealthy hangups that keep us blocked?
