On my walk this morning with Storm, our husky puppy, a huge tree caught my eye. She was bare of her leaves. There was no wind and it was unseasonably warm out. The stillness around me allowed me to truly feel this beauty before me.
As I breathed in, I couldn’t quite conceptualize what I was feeling. Deep peace. Eternal quiet. Happiness. Connection. All of these things.
I had no great revelation that I can share. I had no great thoughts running through my mind. Just a quiet morning and a great bare tree… and I felt one with the Universe.
The Energies of Our Body
In Eastern thought, we were once in a bliss state where Shiva & Shakti were joined in union. In order to incarnate in physical form, Shiva stayed at our crown chakra while Shakti descended into form to live at our root chakra - at our perineum at the base of our spine.
From that place at the base of our spine, the energy radiates up through our bodies invigorating us and always flowing upwards to reunite with our beloved Shiva.
We could envision this as a sunburst from the core of who we are. At our root, the energy is physical, intense, and very real. As the energy waves go further and further up our body, they become less intense in the same way you could imagine a light wave of the sun being less intense the further it is from its source.
Another way of saying this is that the energy in our lower chakras is very physical and heavy (necessary to be alive) and the energy in the higher chakras is much more subtle - getting more and more subtle as we ascend our chakras.
The Energies of Life
We can feel the difference of these energies in our lives as well.
In the lower, denser chakras, we focus on physical things. In struggle, we are concerned with money, work, fitness, relationships, security, and how we fit into society. On good days, we enjoy the abundance of food, sunshine, friendships, work, and enjoying community.
These topics are easy to discuss. We can read articles about how to improve or have more of them. We can share our experiences with others. This is how we interact in the physical world around us.
Yet we know there is more around us than just these physical things. The challenge is that we can’t describe them.
The Subtleties of Life
You are walking down the street on a beautiful sunny day. You are happy, smiling, and as you pass the bakery, the smell of baking bread fills the air.
You are sitting on a couch drinking a delicious cup of coffee while your grandchildren play make-believe chatting and giggling while you sit quietly watching.
You are walking along the water’s edge feeling the mist on your face listening to the waves gently rolling in and seagulls are crying in the distance.
You are sitting in your favourite chair reading a book when a passage moves through your mind and your whole beings stops for a moment to really absorb the beauty that you just read.
You are lying in bed with your love. Gently caressing. Silent. Breathing deeply. Both of you completely absorbed in the potency of the embrace.
You are listening to your favourite music. You are riding on the waves of the melody as the song shifts keys into the most wonderful crescendo that makes you feel like your soul is flowing effortlessly through the sky.
The Magic of the Ineffable
Ineffable. Indescribable. Beyond words. This is where you know you’re experiencing something special.
“Concentrate on the Shakti arising from the root like the rays of the sun, gradually becoming subtler and subtler, until at last she dissolves in the bliss of Union with the Universe.” Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
How do we experience this total union with the Universe? Pay attention to the small things. Honour your spidey senses. Listen with your whole being all of the time.
Slow down. Notice what is happening between the lines. Listen to the silence. Become absorbed in the fullness of the moment.
As we tune into these subtleties, something magical happens within us. Something inside connects with something outside. Something relaxes within us that was holding on very tightly.
We can’t explain it. There are no words.
But it is truly magical and there for all of us.
Hiding in plain sight.
