I’ve been fascinated with relaxation lately. I’ve been researching how a relaxed state affects the vagus nerve (a set of cranial nerves that stimulates or calms every organ in our body) and how constantly thinking about things can keep our bodies in a fight or flight response - even if we seem quite relaxed on the outside.
I’ve also been exploring how deep relaxation can bring us to even greater states of inner peace and love through lovemaking (if this interests you, definitely sign up for my email list HERE, as I have a new course for couples coming out in a few months).
Of course, we are busy people. We love to think about everything. We love to do and create and plan fun things! Personally, I’ve realized that my mind is going all day long on about 12 different channels. Although I’ve normalized this saying that it’s just the way I am (which is true), I’ve been asking the Universe to help me find more quiet moments in my days.
And then, I got stopped at a red light.
Red Light Bliss
So, a week or so ago, I was out driving around running errands, and the light turned red in front of me. Initially, there is that quiet disappointment. Darn, I would have preferred a green light right now.
And then, the thought entered my mind, “What a lovely chance for a little meditation”.
I took a deep breath and relaxed.
My shoulders released from my neck.
My back released into the seat.
My butt unclenched.
Ahhhh…
As the light turned green, I realized what a wonderful blessing that red light was. What a great chance to take a deep breath in the middle of my day!
Joyful Little Breaks
I started thinking about all of the other times when things don’t happen as quickly as we’d like: when we are on the phone and put on hold, when we have to wait in line at the grocery store or bank, or even sitting in a group while folks are making small talk.
What if all of these are amazing opportunities to slow down, take a breath, and reset our nervous system?
I invite you to give it a try. Any time you are slowed down in your day for any reason, what if this is a wonderful chance to take a few deep breaths?
I just love it. Now, red lights are as desirable as green lights. Getting put on hold is as good as getting someone right away.
No matter which way it goes, it’s a win!
