Do you ever go through times when everything is just “blah” and your energy is low? Or maybe you’ve been feeling a lot of uncomfortable emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration. During these times, it’s hard to imagine feeling happy, let alone bliss… but what if we can anyway?
The truth is that life isn’t always ideal. Sometimes situations at work aren’t the best. Sometimes our living situation is challenging and relationships are strained. Or maybe finances are keeping your mind churning at night.
All these things can lead to an eventual feeling of blah and a lack of excitement for getting up in the morning.
So what do we do?
First, we must look at whether or not these feelings are wisdom-indicators and are telling us that we need to make changes. Maybe we need to speak up, find courage, and make some different choices.
But what if it seems like our circumstances aren’t changing? What if what is bothering us is outside of our influence?
The answer is CHOOSING BLISS.
Bliss is not happiness. Happiness and sadness are deeply correlated with pleasure, pain, and right and wrong. These are reactions to our situation - a kind of feedback mechanism as to whether we are on the right path and in the right place.
Bliss is something beyond our human circumstances. It is part of our Divinity.
Living in the World but not Of the World
Have you heard this before? This beautiful saying describes what happens when we connect with the blissful part of ourselves regardless of our circumstances.
We live “of the world”, the world around us dictates our mood, choices, and thoughts. It is always someone out there who is making us feel this way. It is something else that is driving us crazy.
In this case, the world and the people in it dictate the state of our being.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with this. We are meant to care. We are meant to be emotionally invested in the world and the people in our lives. This is why we have incarnated here on Earth!
But from a Tantric perspective, we must also remember WHO WE TRULY ARE while we go about our human lives.
Who are we really?
In the tantric philosophy, we are both human and divine. We are both pure energy and physical. We are god-incarnate getting upset, laughing, crying, wondering, hoping, fearing, connecting, loving, and the whole gamut of the human experience.
The most important thing to deeply understand is that WE ARE BOTH.
We are not meant to ascend to the heavens and not care about others. We are not meant to be aloof and avoid all conflict. We are not meant to “be above” the issues of the “common person”.
We are meant to be fully human.
AND…
We are meant to be fully Divine.
At the same time.
Can you imagine?
Let’s play a game
Imagine yourself in your current circumstances. Check-in with yourself as to whether you are happy or sad about what’s going on. Awesome.
Now imagine a bright light in your heart centre that we will call BLISS. Rest in this light. Remember who you truly are. Feel the expansiveness of yourself into the whole cosmos.
Now look at your circumstances while fully connected to this BLISS.
Imagine your circumstances changing.
Regardless of your comfort or struggle, you can always find this bliss inside.
We often think that our lives would be better if we had a partner, didn’t have a partner, lived in a commune, or lived on a desert island. But in reality, there will always be times of happiness and sadness in all situations.
But this bliss… this is always here.
Imagine living with both of these realities all of the time - fully human and fully blissful…
Living in the world… but not of the world.
